The corner store layout allowed us to try a few new presentations, including three lit window display boxes and the use of numerous Japanese hanging scrolls (many courtesy of member Matt McFarland). Overall, sixty-seven living compositions were displayed courtesy of at least fourteen members. The main trees included the following: Ponderosa pine (9), Kingsville boxwood (4), Japanese maple (3) and J. maple forest (1), Douglas fir (1), American larch forest (1), Korean hornbeam forest (1), One-seed juniper (1), Fukien tea (1), Dwarf Alberta spruce (1), Blaauw juniper (1), Jaboticaba (1), Ficus (2), Brazilian rain tree (2), Amur maple clump (1), Common juniper on rock (1), Colorado blue spruce (1), Dwarf Hinoki false cypress in mossy rock (1), Dwarf Japanese juniper on rock (1), Tri-variegate "mystery tree" (subsequently identified as an Weigela florida 'Verweig' MyMonetTM) (1), Bougainvillea 'Helen Johnson' (1), Satsuki azalea (2), Japanese juniper (2), Dwarf pomegranate (1), Shimpaku juniper Phoenix graft (1), Trident maple (3), Siberian elm (1), Sharp's pygmy maple (1), Rocky Mountain juniper (1), Silver mountain snowberry (1), and English ivy (1). Plus a shohin/mame stand with miniatures of English ivy (1), Pine (1), Juniper (2), Narrow-leaf Ficus (1), Boxwood (1), and other (2); And a "Potensai" section with a Douglas fir forest, Engleman spruce, Ficus, Dwarf princess elm, Japanese cedar, Brush cherry, Dwarf Alberta spruce, Siberian elm forest, and Ponderosa pine. Plus sixteen suiseki/viewing stones, one gong shi/Chinese scholar stone, one Chrysanthemum stone, and fifteen accent/accessory plants; The top 3 vote-getters for the People's Choice Award (out of 251 sets of 3-choice ballots cast on Saturday, perhaps 1/3 or 1/4 of that day's traffic) were: 1) Dwarf Hinoki false cypress growing out of a very mossy Tufa rock, 2) Brazilian rain Tree, and 3) Small Bougainvillea in bloom with reddish showy bracts. The raffle trees won were two Chinese elms. One of these was David Conlin's Saturday demo tree. Ross Huddleson worked on a Jacueline Hillier elm on Sunday. At the show we signed up two new Individual and two new Family memberships. Out of only 33 written responses to the question "How did you hear about the Bonsai show?" 18 persons said walk by or otherwise at the Mall, 5 from one of the local papers, 3 each from the Internet or a club member, 2 from a relative, and one each from a friend or knowledge of us at last year's show (?). Channel 5 KOAA came down on Saturday and later aired a 40-second+ piece on us in the 5:30 p.m. news. Overall traffic was much larger and more diverse than at previous shows. We were all very pleasantly surprised at the results. Our thanks to all the members who participated, especially to Steve Alford, and all the friends, family and general public who visited us! Pictures to follow. © 2010 Pikes Peak Bonsai Society |
